Maureen Uzoh

Maureen Uzoh

Maureen Uzoh (b. 1997) is a Nigerian Pop Surrealist artist based in London. Known for her signature balloon-headed figures, her work explores themes of freedom, resilience, and emotional identity.

A self-taught artist with academic training in Sociology and International Relations, Maureen’s practice is shaped by her lived experiences as a young African woman navigating life, creativity, and survival in the UK. Her mixed media approach combining painting, drawing, and embroidery, allows her to explore the unseen weight of emotion and the human desire for release.

Her work has been shown internationally, including exhibitions with Calabar Gallery (New York), African Artists Foundation (Nigeria), Broadworks x Hive (London), and Nosakhari during London Fashion Week. Currently, Maureen is developing a new series of paintings inspired by the personal stories shared through Project Freedom - an ongoing public art initiative where participants release handwritten messages into the sky via red balloons. This evolving body of work seeks to honour these anonymous voices and foster emotional connection across shared experiences.
