Yewon Lee (b. 1994, Seoul, Korea) is an interdisciplinary artist based between London and Seoul. She holds a BA and MFA in Oriental Painting from Seoul National University and an MA in Painting from the Royal College of Art. Her work has been exhibited internationally in London, Milan, Berlin, and Seoul, and she was shortlisted for The Gilchrist-Fisher Award, the Sir John Hurt Art Prize, and the New Contemporary 2024.

Her work explores the fluidity of identity, capturing its ever-changing nature as shaped by various life experiences. Through enigmatic animals, Lee metaphorically expresses the dynamic, evolving self. Having moved from Seoul to London, she blends traditional Korean painting with Western collage methods, reflecting Cultural Syncretism. Lee’s art embodies the convergence of different cultural traditions, inviting viewers to reflect on how personal and cultural influences continuously reshape identity in a constantly evolving world.

“I use Hanji as a surface to explore identity not as something fixed, but as something gently unraveling. My work follows the quiet rhythm of change — layered, intuitive, and always becoming. I rarely know where it’s going — but that’s the point.”
